There’s a lot of conflicting information to be read, about whether it’s better to have an active recovery or a passive rest day immediately following a long, hard workout. As the miles creep up, I’ve been taking both of my rest days on either side of the week’s longest run. It seems to be working for me- my legs are fresh for the challenge and then are able to spend the next day repairing from the hell I put them through. However, I planned on mixing it up a bit and trying the active recovery thing this morning. There was an 8:30am Bootcamp at UEF which I was assured would be mostly core focused. When I first woke at 7am, it was still in the cards. When I woke again at 8:20am, I had to fold.
One article I read considers a day with foam rolling, and no other exercise, to be an active recovery. I foam roll every day, so does this mean I’ve been actively recovering 7 days a week for the past 11 weeks?! Foam rolling feels great and does a body good, but I’m not sure I believe that it counts as exercise. CMB is currently training for a Half Ironman under the direction of a triathlon coach, and hasn’t had a passive rest day in two weeks. Perhaps because I am a person of extremes, I either have to be going balls out or sitting on my butt, nothing in between. Maybe I’ll try again next weekend. And then again, maybe I won’t.
