WEEK 5 DAY 7

“Mill Valley–Sausalito Multi-purpose Path is a convenient connection between neighborhoods, schools, shopping, restaurants and a skate park. There is also an adjacent dog park: Mill Valley. Between the skate and dog parks, on a nice day there can be all kinds of excitement and an assortment of aerobatic displays by both man and beast, alike, to enjoy. The short dirt section at the north end is just a minor neighborhood connection and can easily be omitted if you are riding a bike or skating. Otherwise, the trail is mostly asphalt and turns to concrete as the trail approaches the southern end, which parallels a fairly busy roadway.

Overall, the trail gets a good mix of cyclists, walkers, joggers and skaters, so brush up on the rules of the trails before you begin.” TrailLink.com

I know that its terrible to make sweeping generalizations about entire groups of people but I’m going to anyway- CYCLISTS ARE ASSHOLES. Maybe not all of them, I do love me a man who likes to ride his bike. But I can state without hesitation, the majority of cyclists who use the Mill Valley Mulit-purpose (NOT BIKE) Path are dreadful human beings.

With 12 training miles to cover, KKD and I decided to again begin on the path and simply run a little further past Sausalito than we did last week. I wasn’t surprised to see groups of bike riders making their way along the same route we chose to follow. What does shock me every time I use this path, is the sense of entitlement most of these cyclists share. I get it- they are moving way faster than a couple of runners. We are always aware of them coming up behind or towards us and willingly shift to running single file (I don’t have a death wish). But a multi-purpose path is not the Indy 500. Slow the hell down! Save your impressive feats of speed for the road. When cyclists force runners off the path because their pack refuses to ride singularly, I say you are a group of giant assholes. And when riders actually yell at said runners as if they did something wrong, I say you are… well I can’t say because my kids read this blog.

I’ve always loved using this multi-purpose path to log a lot of miles and don’t plan on taking it out of the rotation because of some nasty cyclists. But next time, watch out. I’ll be prepared for a stand-off with a squirt gun (or two) in hand(s), ready.Go ahead, make my day.

    Hi,

Recently two young boys were walking on the Mill Valley Multi-use Path after their first soccer game of the season when they were struck by a bike rider going almost 25 mph. All three ended up in the hospital.

We need to prevent a tragedy happening and increase safety on the path now.

I just signed a Care2 petition telling the City of Mill Valley and County of Marin to address these urgent safety concerns now. Will you sign too? Here’s a link to the petition:

    Thank you.
